“Bringing Ben Home” shares the story of Ben Spencer’s remarkable determination to remain hopeful that justice would prevail in the face of a wrongful conviction. Ben Spencer, a black man, was wrongfully convicted of a horrendous murder of a white man in 1987 and spent over 30 years in prison. Ben spent his time in prison educating himself and others and becoming a beacon of hope for those caught in an unjust system. He was not released until 2021 and his conviction wasn’t vacated until 2022 once misplaced DNA evidence proved his innocence. Author, Barbara Bradley Hagerty, believed in Ben’s innocence and spent years attempting to win his release. The author, along with attorneys and investigators, didn’t give up on proving that the Houston Police Department, Prosecutor’s Office, and Criminal Investigation Unit failed to fairly investigate and prosecute Ben’s case. After over 30 years in prison, Ben was finally reunited with family, including a grown son who was born while he was in prison. Ben’s faith in God, empathy to those in pain around him, and his hopefulness are an inspiration to us all and a call to never give up until justice prevails.
